My eyes are drawn to the moving clouds as I watch the busy street crawl with the hardworking people of Cologne.
“DREAM ON BABY
WERE HIS LAST WORDS TO ME.”
-ROAD HEAD, JAPANESE BREAKFAST
The strong Cold Brew coffee laces around my veins, and the smell of espresso tickle the hairs in my nose. These lyrics stick with me as I think of a past relationship that relates perfectly to Michelle’s words. As the dreamy synths and mesmerizing bass line wrap around my racing mind, I’m taken to another planet in my head.
“THAT’S NOT THE WAY
TO HURT ME.”
-SOFT SOUNDS FROM ANOTHER PLANET, JAPANESE BREAKFAST
Japanese Breakfast’s latest album, Soft Sounds From Another Planet, is a beautiful daydream that you could explore forever. Keeping the classic Japanese Breakfast sounds, front woman Michelle Zauner transforms this album into a more mature and celestial piece of work.
The lyrics stay incredible as ever – reflecting on the person Michelle has become after surviving through the pain of her mother’s death, reflecting that train of thought of being resilient and strong, and looking back on another time to other relationships and remembering how heightened her feelings were back then. As I read through each song’s lyrics, you could literally feel the honesty and genuine emotions cut through your skin as they paint soft colors through your bloodstream. They are words to relate to, and they have the power to heal you. In a DIY interview, Michelle says that the album “addresses the fact that you’re not isolated in your pain; it’s a universal thing, and hopefully, there’s some advice on there on how to move forward. For myself, and for others.”
This album is full of depth as it explores a world unknown. Michelle masters a dreamy indie pop album with her melodic guitar, ethereal synths and keyboard, catchy bass lines, and soothing drum beats. The sounds coincide perfectly with her planetary daydream, turning it into an album where you can simultaneously forget about the world around you while reflecting upon yourself and the feelings the sounds deliver.
